Garmin Venu Sq Smartwatch [REVIEW]

I received the Garmin Venu Sq two weeks ago (you might have caught it on my Day in the Life vlog), and since then I’ve been putting it through its paces. As a big Garmin fan and a current brand ambassador, I was very excited to receive a GPS smartwatch that looked sleeker than its sportier brethren in the Garmin wearables lineup. I mean, I absolutely love the Garmin Forerunner 945 as a triathlete, but it somewhat cramped my feminine style when wearing dressier stuff.

That’s the big thing for me with the Venu Sq: its looks and style, plus the fact that it’s a smartwatch with internal GPS, full-featured health and wellness tracking, internal music storage — all at a very reasonable price.

I wrote about the Garmin Venu smartwatch around this time last year, launched alongside other Garmin wearables. The Venu Sq is its square-faced younger sibling. Here are the differences between the two:

  • LCD instead of AMOLED screen – this is not really noticeable unless you plan on looking at the screen for hours on end like we do with our smartphones. What using LCD means is that the watch has better battery life even with the Always On screen.
  • Aluminium bezel instead of steel – The watch is light as a whisper on my small forearm, and I barely notice I have it on most of the day. It’s still hardy enough to withstand getting knocked about for the past two weeks.
  • No altimeter or gyroscope – The Venu Sq won’t track number of flights of stairs climbed, nor does it natively sense altitude. Instead, it uses GPS information to extrapolate altitude gain.
  • Non-music edition available – The Venu Sq Music retails at P14,495, but its non-music edition is priced even lower at P11,595. The regular Venu is only available with internal music storage and is priced at P21,995.

If you’re interested in seeing all the features of the Garmin Venu Sq, Garmin provided a nice and detailed video.

So you can see why the Venu Sq is attractive to people who want a reasonably priced, stylish GPS smartwatch that’s a Garmin. Of course, I put it through its paces and share my thoughts in the vlog below:

I would recommend the Garmin Venu Sq for someone who is looking to buy their first Garmin smartwatch with internal GPS and is interested in tracking their health and fitness activities.
