Last month I ran into a group exercise instructor colleague of mine. We’ve both resigned from the gym chain we used to work at, but she’s gone on to pursue Pilates as a career — and trail ultramarathons as a hobby. (She’s a special kind of nut and I love her for it.) I think she’d be first to pounce on registering for the Salomon X-Trail Run happening on July 23, 2017 in Subic Bay. Continue reading “Salomon X-Trail Run Pilipinas on July 23”
This weekend at BaseKamp (Pintong Bukawe, Rizal), the Pilipinas Trail Running Camp will hold the first in a series of three camps to introduce new runners to trail running and equip both new and veteran trail runners with the skills and knowledge to prepare for local and international races.

For self-confessed run addicts like myself, running is like a food that nourishes our bodies and souls. It is something we can’t live without. But if you’re just starting out, the thought of slogging through miles on the road, rail, or treadmill may not be too appetizing.
To whet your appetite for running, here are 10 reasons you need to run, NOW.
I’ve got a number of runner friends who are heavily involved in ultramarathons and trail running, so I don’t often see them at road or tri events. It came as a very pleasant surprise to find out they have a huge expedition brewing for 2015!
It began as one Facebook post inquiring whether there were connecting trails or natural pathways for the 6 provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region to make it the ultimate venue for the longest trail expedition in the Philippines. The idea, both being novel and challenging, stoked the interest of almost everyone especially those who are nature lovers and have solid athletic background.
The Cordillera Great Traverse (CGT) 2015 is an expedition aiming to establish the longest and the most scenic hiking/trekking destination in the Philippines by connecting the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Philippines. This weekend, athletes will gather in Alabang for the Filinvest City Endurance Weekend: on Saturday there’s a 12-hour trail run, and on Sunday a 12-hour mountain bike event. As someone who’s never gone beyond six hours of exercise, this kind of blows my mind. All kudos to those participating!
Now if you’d like to get into trail running, there’s a smart, “Never Settle” way of going about it to ensure you stay safe and have fun so you keep coming back for more. The Mizuno Run Academy returns this year with an Intro to Trail Running, facilitated by Coach Patrick Joson.
Coach Patrick is a certified ITU Level 2 coach and Pose Method instructor, the first in the Philippines. I’ve taken a few sessions under him for both bike and run and he’s definitely helped me understand the mechanics of human movement.
The Intro to Trail Running module has lectures and practical sessions so you can take a scientific and holistic approach to running and athletics on trails. It will take place at Filinvest City on the following dates:
- Session 1: The Pose Method by Dr. Nicholas Romanov (September 28) Technique simplification, elimination of injuries and full utilization of your physiological potential.
- Session 2: The Maffetone None-Method by Dr. Phil Maffetone (October 26) A style that will teach you how to take charge of your health and fitness —- and succeed at it.
- Session 3: Introduction to Trail Running (November 2) In a nutshell, everything you need to know about trail running, from methodology to safety measures and proper gear.
- Session 4: 10K Graduation Trail Run (November 16) Come in full running attire.
Your registration fee of P2,000 includes a running kit, shirt, exclusive discounts on Mizuno products, and admission to the Graduation Run. If you have a Mizuno Prestige Card, you get P500 off on registration. Register now at Mizuno stores in Magallanes, Bonifacio High Street, SM Aura, SM Mall of Asia, Alabang Town Center, Trinoma, SM Megamall, Eastwood, Robinsons Galleria, and Festival Mall.
While we city-dwellers do most of our running on pavement, it’s generally recommended to run on trails because there’s less impact on joints so you can safely build up mileage with less injury risk. It’s great that there’s an easily-accessible trail venue like Filinvest City. I might give trail running a go sometime. :)
I always joke about how dirt is my Kryptonite, but it’s true. I am never at ease on trails surrounded by grass and trees. This comes from growing up in the urban jungle of concrete and glass. Still, I’m always up for a once-a-year challenge, and I got it when I hit the dirt at the Men’s Health All-Terrain Race 2011 on June 5 in Nuvali. After missing out on TNF Nuvali, I was really looking forward to the Merrell Adventure Run held last Saturday, April 17, at Wawa Dam in Montalban, Rizal. It would be my first trail run, and thanks to A&F Magazine and Runnerspeak I had a free 3K race kit and pair of Merrell Waterpro trail shoes.
