SuBIT 2014 Reminders and Tips

Two weeks ago I bumped into someone who told me she was doing her first triathlon in SuBIT, the age group sprint distance happening on Saturday. I’m racing the standard distance on Sunday but I will be watching and cheering on the Saturday sprint racers, too. It’s a great way to get into triathlon, particularly because SuBIT is an international race so you share the same course as the elites from different countries.

Because the sprint races start and finish at the New Container Terminal, it’ll be easy to watch the swim, the bike out and in, and the finish. If you’re in Subic early on Saturday morning or if you’ll be there from Friday night onwards, I highly encourage catching the Saturday races. The teen mini-sprint and elite junior sprint are hotly contested and truly inspiring because these are the future of triathlon in the Philippines and Asia. (Plus, these kids are so fast they make me feel like a snail!) Also don’t miss the paratriathlon if you really want to see grit, determination, and guts. 🙂

Swim start and T1 are at New Container Terminal. To get there, go on Argonaut Highway and head toward Dungaree Beach. You will go up and left onto San Bernardo Road, which goes past airport hangars. Turn right at the junction and keep driving past Dungaree and All Hands Beach. (It’s a roundabout way to get to NCT, but the more direct route from the intersection of Argonaut and Tarlac Road will be closed on April 26 and 27.)

Standard distance T2 will be at Harbor Point Mall. You may deposit T2 bags at the race expo on Saturday, but the better way to do it would be to get up a little earlier on Sunday morning to put your T2 stuff (running shoes, visor, nutrition) into your transition box yourself. Rack your bike and put your bike stuff (helmet, shoes, race belt with bib number) at T1 at NCT.

For participants, there will be a complimentary pasta/carboloading dinner the night before your race, and a complimentary brunch after your race. Additional meal tickets for companions may be purchased.

Race admin central and expo will be at the Travelers Hotel. Please attend your designated race briefing so that if you have any questions about the routes and the conduct of the race itself, you can bring it up. It’s really important especially if you haven’t had time to recon the course. You don’t want your finish time to be invalidated because you missed a loop on the bike or the run. 🙂

Best spots to observe the standard distance race are the swim finish/T1 area in NCT, the junction from NCT to Argonaut (participants on the bike will pass 5 times), and the corner of Labitan Street and Dewey Avenue (participants running will pass 6 times). Traffic on the bike course will be controlled but can’t be closed.

It’s going to be a hot weekend, so if you’re observing and supporting, keep a bottle of water close by and stay in the shade as much as possible.
