You know when you get that feeling that you’ve got to shake things up somewhat? That feeling you get when you just want to get away? Well, I was struck by an extreme case of wanderlust when one of my friends from my former job as a fitness instructor posted a pic of himself surfing.
“Gee, I haven’t done that in forever!” I thought to myself — and promptly got myself invited along on their next surf trip which just so happened to be a two-day, one-night trip to Baler, Aurora. Watch the travel vlog below:
Baler is known as the birthplace of Philippine surfing and attracts a sizeable weekend and holiday crowd. It hasn’t gentrified like La Union though, I’m told. It’s still got that small-town feel and while some nice resorts have opened, they still co-exist cheek-by-jowl with simple inns and bed-and-breakfasts. What I enjoyed was surfing like a local: heading to lesser-populated breaks so we could pretty much get an unlimited serving of waves every single time. We were also there from Sunday to Monday when most tourists usually depart for Manila, so there was such a laidback feel to everything.
It was pretty much “Eat. Surf. Sleep. Repeat.” This trip was like a concentrated hit of adrenaline, chasing that stoked feeling through three surf sessions before heading back to Manila on a six-hour bus ride. It’s not how I usually travel, but it was just what I needed to tide me through. Well, at least until the next wave of wanderlust hits.
