It’s been 12 years since I started running and writing about it, so this week I realised that there may be a whole bunch of readers and Youtube subscribers who don’t know my story. So I decided this is the perfect time to re-introduce myself and how I got into running.
Back in my university days, running wasn’t a popular sport and wasn’t something I thought I’d ever get into. Even further back, in high school I had such bad coordination that I was the second bench warmer for our high school volleyball team. (Participation was compulsory, lol)
I really actually only got into running on treadmills to lose weight, so it was all about the calorie burn and never about how fast or far I was going. That changed when I ran my first race in 2009 and experienced the feeling of wind rushing past me as I sped through the streets, and the emotional and physical high of crossing a finish line.

Running one race led to running a half marathon and then my first marathon. That led into doing my first triathlon. Some years later, I did my first (and last) ironman and understood that I ran and did endurance sport not because of the finish line feeling, but because of the entire process of training and tinkering that brought me to starting lines.
These days I run not for races, but for the health benefits I gain from being fit and physically active. I also have running to thank for where I am in life right now. My current employer hired me because I was already writing about running and endurance sport. Funny how things work out!
