There are brave souls who still forge ahead with the vocation, like Atom Araullo. Many will remember him from his coverage of Typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban, which went viral online.
Atom has since continued to create award-winning investigative pieces. Much of this work is physically demanding, with a lot of travel and not much in the way of creature comforts. Even when he’s working on less action-packed projects like his recent foray into filmmaking with Citizen Jake, Atom is always willing to rise to the challenge. The concept is “office warrior” inspired by a popular American television show which has participants tackling obstacles to get to the end of the course. Then we learned Atom was doing all the stunts himself! Shooting a commercial involves long hours and multiple takes, so that is a pretty big undertaking.
Atom said, “When they first told me about the idea of doing this sort of ‘office warrior’ obstacle course, it immediately piqued my interest. I knew it needed intense preparation so there was the physical preparation, getting fit. I feel like I’m reasonably fit, but I had to do a bit of training with the Ninja Academy in Pasig. And then there’s also the mental preparation, being confident if I can actually pull this off.” He added, “But you know it speaks volumes about how all of us prepare for our daily life. It kind of dramatizes what all of us must feel in our respective lines of work. Sometimes it’s kind of a struggle to get through the day… like an obstacle course that you have to muscle through.”
