Nike Run Club Open House

Last Saturday, Nike Run Club held an Open House event where runners could discover what NRC is about and what it can do for their running. Sessions were held in the morning and afternoon led by the Nike Run Club pacers as well as coaches Ian Banzon, Ico Ejercito, and Rio de la Cruz.

NRC Open House

I dropped by in the afternoon because I’d missed the Thursday session due to my Singapore trip. I didn’t realize Bonifacio Global City, and Bonifacio High Street in particular, was a hive of activity on Saturdays! Thankfully the NRC tent was where it usually is, in front of the Nike Park store. Next Race: Ho Chi Minh City Run on 15 January 2017

Coming home from Challenge Vietnam, I found myself wishing I could have seen more of Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City, as it’s officially known these days.

Well, in January I’ll get my wish: I’m heading back for the Ho Chi Minh City Run on January 15, 2017. With 5K, 10K, 21K, and 42K distances as well as a kids dash, there’s something for everybody.

HCMC Run: The City Marathon
the Kids Dash

I’m aiming for the half-marathon as it puts something on the table for me to train for without overtaxing my body. A half-marathon is also a great way to see the highlights of a city without completely killing the legs for more sightseeing in the afternoon. Lastly, it burns enough calories so I can indulge in pho bo, banh mi, and my favorite ca phe sua da (Vietnamese coffee). Continue reading “Next Race: Ho Chi Minh City Run on 15 January 2017”

Kikay Reviews: Fitbit Charge 2

Ever since I received the Fitbit Charge HR early this year, life hasn’t been the same. I’ve been able to:

  • determine how much I actually move around and sit still throughout an entire day (on rest days I’m a sloth!)
  • accumulate enough daily steps to have walked the entire length of Italy (that’s 1,184 kilometers since I started using a Fitbit)
  • see that I’m not recovering fast enough from a lengthy illness (which led me to decrease end-of-season racing plans)

My Fitbit has enabled me to “quantify my life” and you know what the numbers nerds say: what can be measured can be controlled.Β

Holiday Fitness, Week 3: Singapore Interlude

Last week I took my parents over to Singapore for a little travel break. The last time they were in Singapore, it was 2013 and I couldn’t make it because the Laguna Phuket Triathlon was on that same weekend. So I decided to make some memories with them and revisit one of my favorite running grounds over there as well.

The thing is, traveling in Singapore requires a lot of walking and I usually rack up a gazillion steps on my Fitbit every time I visit. I was worried my parents would be wiped out by our commute. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to drag them all over the place on foot. Continue reading “Holiday Fitness, Week 3: Singapore Interlude”

Holiday Fitness, Week 2: Work in Progress

One of the things I’ve been keeping tabs on is how often I’ve gotten sick this year. Having my nephew running around my place most days means I get exposed to all sorts of virulent strains; every time he had a runny nose, I’d get struck down for a whole week.

Well, last week I realized it had been more than a month since I’d last had a full-blown cold or flu. I came close a few times, but a day’s rest and a good night’s sleep were able to ward the sniffles off. It’s amazing how well the human body can recover, but to get to this point I’ve had to drop any sort of hard training and gain some weight — five pounds, to be exact. It’s a good trade-off though, because being sick sucks. Continue reading “Holiday Fitness, Week 2: Work in Progress”

Kikay Reviews: Under Armour Charged Bandit 2

With the start of the UA Run Crew last week, Under Armour is poised for a bigger presence in the Philippine running community. The brand seeks a bigger share of the running shoe market with their latest offering, the Charged Bandit 2.

Under Armour Charged Bandit 2

I’ve mainly been running in the Speedform Apollo for races and short distance sessions, and the “Speedform Gemini for marathon training. This was my first experience with the Bandit line, which is on Under Armour’s second tier of neutral running shoes, at a slightly lower price point. Holiday Fitness, Week 1: Nike Run Club

With no racing in my immediate future, I can turn my attention toward rebuilding my fitness properly. This year more than ever I’ve seen the importance of taking things slow to be able to go fast later on, so a return to basics is in order.

The problem with race-based training is that when you go into the offseason, suddenly it’s like you’ve got nothing to aim for. Couple the offseason with the start of the Christmas holiday season, and it’s a recipe for letting yourself go.

I took on a challenge from my friends at Nike to use the Nike+ Run Club app to help keep me on track. Continue reading “Holiday Fitness, Week 1: Nike Run Club”
