Finding My Way Home with the BlackBerry Z10

I got my BlackBerry Z10 in April, right around the time I started doing long rides in preparation for my triathlons. One of my long rides took me eastward to Rizal. I would pack up my bike and drive up Antipolo, past Teresa and park at DPWH Morong with a bunch of other cyclists. We’d log mileage through Jala-Jala or Bugarin, then drive back to Manila.

One time, the car I was convoying with took a different route back, and when I lost my companions at a turn, I found myself lost. I would have panicked, but realized I had the Maps app on my Z10. How hard could it be to find a way home?

I opened the Maps app, which used the Z10’s GPS to locate me. My Globe Powersurf 499 data connection allowed Maps to download the area’s road map so I could see where I was, which was somewhere in Angono, Rizal.

Could I possibly find my way from Angono to Pasig, where I live?

I keyed in my destination, the Eastbank Road that runs parallel to Pasig River, and Maps tracked a route from my current location to it. As I drove, Maps guided me with turn-by-turn navigation cues to let me know it was time to watch out for the turns.

The roads got narrower and more congested with tricycles, but I trusted that Maps wouldn’t lead me wrong. With a big sigh of relief, I finally got onto familiar roads and switched off Maps. I knew that the next time I needed to find my way home from a run or a ride, I could rely on my Z10, Maps, and Globe Powersurf 499, which gives me 1GB of data monthly — more than enough for all my traveling needs.
