Stride for Hope

Late last year, my cousin signed me up for a 10K at Stride for Hope, the family fun run organized by Makati Hope Christian School, where his son goes. Now I’ve been so busy lately with work at the gym that I haven’t had the time to do any serious running, let alone run my first 10K. So the race date crept up on me, and did I feel rusty!

With a little more than a thousand runners in attendance (mostly from MHCS), this was an intimate race so I didn’t feel much pressure coming off the blocks. Most of the serious runners were at Subic for the Subic International Marathon, or doing long runs preparing for Condura Skyway Marathon, or basta, somewhere else. I did find kindred spirits among the 10K runners who were in this race for a good workout. (Hello Team 24/7!)

BGC’s New Active Lifestyle Stores at Two Parkade

You all know I’m a taong BGC — I hang out there, sometimes I “work” there (blogging), I dine there, I train there, and I most definitely shop there. What’s great about BGC and Bonifacio High Street is how it’s become a sort of hub for the active lifestyle. Not only do you have runners populating the area, but you also have various gyms, yoga studios, and other fitness centers in the area. And that makes Bonifacio High Street the perfect place to open shop if you’re an active lifestyle store. Whatever you do, make sure you get your training done before you go shopping!

Read on to find out what stores excited me so much they warranted a blog post. Continue reading “BGC’s New Active Lifestyle Stores at Two Parkade”

Cheese! to the Running Photographers

Remember the days when “Photovendo” was synonymous with running photos? That was years ago. These days, when you see someone snapping your photos with a DSLR camera at a race, they’re more likely to come from one of the running groups that have taken it upon themselves to immortalize your running agony and triumph in photos.

Marian Rivera and Robin Padilla for Women’s Health and Men’s Health Jan-Feb 2013

Women’s Health and Men’s Health are getting the year off to a great start with Marian Rivera and Robin Padilla on their respective covers. Both are no strangers to the top-selling magazines; Marian has appeared on Women’s Health twice before, and Robin once.

Summit Media invited running bloggers (myself included) to the press launch of the magazines’ first issues for the year, so it gave us a chance to hear firsthand how Marian and Robin prepared for their cover shoots and what role fitness plays in their lives. The Kinetic Kim Atienza

Today is the 21st of January 2013. It’s KikayRunner.com’s third anniversary! At this time of year, I always feature a runner who has influenced me and many others. May I turn your attention to this guy:

Kim Atienza on Runners World Magazine
We all call him Kuya Kim.

Kuya Kim Atienza is someone everyone recognizes. From his nightly gig as weatherman for TV Patrol to his noontime appearances as co-host for It’s Showtime and weekly episodes of Matanglawin, he’s one of Philippine TV’s most well-loved personalities.

But for all his reknown, he’s very approachable. I first met him when I joined a regular run with his group; he was about to tackle his first tri, the 2012 Subic Bay International Triathlon, which was also my first Olympic distance triathlon.

He’s full of boundless energy and infectiously positive. In this month’s Runners’ World magazine, he talks about how he bounced back from a debilitating stroke to become the adik runner and triathlete he is now.

I’m so glad he could take some time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions. Read on to find out why he runs with girls (like me), how he got so fast, and who’s got the abs in the family. Continue reading “The Kinetic Kim Atienza”
