A Kikay Runner Christmas Contest!

Throughout my years as a running blogger I’ve been given many blessings — even more than I can really use or enjoy for myself. I’ve taken to giving some away to friends and family. This year, in keeping with the Christmas season of giving, I want to share these blessings with you, my readers.

So, what items are up for grabs?

Reminders for QCIM 2012: Parking & Cut-Off Times

I don’t live in Quezon City anymore, so I can’t just run to the Quezon Memorial Circle from my home like I did two years ago. The organizers have helpfully provided the following list of areas where participants can park their vehicles:

  • QC Hall
  • North Ave. (Wild Life)
  • Masaya St. (Teacher’s Village)
  • Kalayaan Ave.
  • Visayas Ave.

Take note that these roads may also be subject to heavier traffic than normal because of their use as parking.

If you’re doing the full marathon, the gun start will be at 3:00am promptly, and race cut-off will be at 10:00am, giving you 7 hours to complete the full 42 kilometers. Aside from the race cut-off, there will also be distance cut-offs. Here are the times you need to have passed a certain distance marker to avoid being swept off the race course:

  • 21KM Mark: 6:30am
  • 30KM Mark: 8:00am
  • 35KM Mark: 9:00am

This is an established practice in all international races. Please understand that organizers will adhere to these cut-off times to ensure the safety of participants.

Let’s all have fun and stay safe on Sunday. See you there!

An Open Letter to Piolo Pascual

Dear Piolo (or should I call you PJ?),

When I started joining races in July 2009 and ran a 51-minute 10K my first time out, I felt quite satisfied with my finish. Little did I know that three months later you would run your maiden 10K in 47 minutes and 54 seconds, creating the “sub-Piolo” target that runners including myself would try to beat, because 10K in 50 minutes just wasn’t good enough anymore.

I never followed your showbiz career, but your athletic exploits became benchmarks I would try to beat. Continue reading “An Open Letter to Piolo Pascual”

QCIM 2012 Race Kit Contest Winners

Before I reveal the two winners who each get a QCIM 2012 race kit, let me give you the correct answers to my trivia quiz. You’d be surprised how many people stumbled over my trick question!

  1. Who was the mayor of Quezon City when the first QCIM was held? Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Jr. was the incumbent mayor in 2009. He was succeeded by Herbert “Bistek” Bautista the succeeding year.
  2. What is the full name of the organization behind the QCIM? Many people gave the name of the current race organizer/director Without Limits/Proactive as the answer. However, The Executive Runners Club Philippines, Inc. is the organization that masterminds the QCIM through all the years it has been held. I asked for the full name, by the way.
  3. Through what roads will the marathon route pass? I gave three options with street names and actual routes of marathons, but none of them are the marathon route for the QCIM 2012. The correct answer is none of the above. The closest answer “North Ave., Epifanio de los Santos Ave., Commonwealth Ave., University Ave.” was the route for the inaugural QCIM, but the current route no longer passes North Avenue and EDSA.
  4. What is the QCIM’s major sponsor? I think it’s a triumph for SMDC that their brand has become so closely identified with the QCIM that all participants were able to answer this question correctly.

QCIM 2012 answers

Out of 124 entries, only 6 were completely correct! Yes, I was surprised too. Let’s input it into Randomizer.org:

Congratulations to Anthony E. Servinio and Marquiz Albert Minlay for winning a QCIM race kit each! I will contact you through email for further instructions on how to claim your kits.

Thank you all for participating in my little race kit contest. If you didn’t win a race kit, don’t worry: registration is still open! :)

How to Race Faster Without (Really) Trying

Based on informal chitchat with my fellow runners, I’ve come to realize plenty of people choose to move up to longer distances rather than try to get faster at the shorter distances. But fitness for distance running is made of both speed and endurance, and everyone needs to work on both to improve in this sport.

Brooks Run: Happy!

In my years of running races, I’ve discovered easy ways to boost your speed on race day without (really) trying. I call it “free speed” because you get something for practically nothing. Try them out for yourself. ;) Continue reading “How to Race Faster Without (Really) Trying”

QCIM 2012 Updates and Race Kit Contest!

For those brave souls running the full 42K on December 2 at the Quezon City International Marathon, please take note that your official gunstart is 3am. Please be at the Quezon Memorial Circle before then! This early gunstart will also give you 7 hours before the cutoff at 10am. That’s more than enough time to do a full marathon if you’ve trained properly for it. ;)

If you still haven’t registered for the QCIM, I’ve got a treat for you! I’m raffling off two QCIM race kits! Just answer this trivia quiz correctly for a chance to win. Contest period is from November 17 to 19. Winners will be notified via email and may claim their kits at the Without Limits office (24F Malingap St. Teachers Village, QC, Mondays – Fridays, 9am-6pm, Tel. No. 3837658) until November 26.

UPDATE: The contest is closed! Please await announcement of winners. Thank you for participating!

Sunpiology Run on November 24

Sunpiology Run 2012
Sunpiology Run

I’m really happy that the Sunpiology Run returned for a second edition this year. I enjoyed last year’s race despite needing to leave for a work thing and missing my own third place awarding. (Check out last year’s race report.)

This year’s Sunpiology Run (featuring Sunlife Financial ambassador and actor Piolo Pascual) will be held on November 24 at the Venice Piazza, McKinley Hill. This is on a Saturday afternoon. The race features a 1K (for kids only) and the signature Without Limits distances 3K, 6K, and 12K. Reg fees are P200 for 1K, P800 for 3K or 6K, and P1000 for 12K. While this seems pricey, all race registrants (except participants in the 1K) also get admission to the Star Magic Gives Back concert which follows after the race. Concert-only tickets are valued at P500 for general admission, so if you run the 6K and attend the concert it’s like you only paid P300 for your race. ;)

The Star Magic Gives Back concert is also on its second edition. The common thread that ties it to the Sunpiology Run is Piolo’s involvement; the concert last year, which raised over half a million pesos for charity, was his brainchild. The concert lineup includes Pokwang, John “Sweet” Lapus, Sam Milby, Khalil Ramos, Daniel Padilla, Kathryn Bernardo, Enrique Gil, JM De Guzman, Alex Castro, Bryan Termulo, Myrtle Sarrosa, Robi Domingo, Sam Concepcion, Drei Felix, Megan Young, Jolo Estrada, Bangs Garcia, Empress, Paolo Avelino, JasonAbalos, Young JV, Rayver Cruz, Matteo Guidicelli, Bugoy Drilon, Liezel Garcia, Nyoy Volante, Yeng Constantino, Angeline Quinto, Xian Lim, Enchong Dee and Maja Salvador. OK, if you didn’t take the time to read all the names, Star Magic is more or less throwing its entire young artista roster at you. ;)

While the Sunpiology Run benefits Piolo Pascual’s Hebreo Foundation (which sends poor but deserving students to school), proceeds from the Star Magic concert will be donated to ABS-CBN’s Lingkod Kapamilya, The Reception and Study Center for Children (a home for abandoned, abused, neglected, and exploited children aged seven years old and below), and The Sanctuary Center.

Race registration is ongoing at Toby’s (Shangri-la, Mall of Asia, and Robinsons Ermita) and RUNNR (Trinoma, Bonifacio High Street, and Alabang Town Center). If you’re interested in attending the concert only, you may also purchase concert tickets at these venues.
