Run, Women, Run!

As a woman runner, I am in the minority during a regular race. There are always more men than women on the road, especially in the distance categories I join. The air during the start queue is thick with testosterone and man-smell (yes, men smell).

At the Women’s Health Athena All-Women’s Run last Saturday, only women were permitted on the road. How different would this race be?

Mizuno and Me

I’ve engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle for almost 10 years. In that period of time I’ve gone through many pairs of shoes from different brands. But when I tried out my first pair of Mizuno shoes (the Wave Inspire 6), something really clicked for me. They were so light and comfortable, yet provided the kind of stability my weak ankles needed. I didn’t want to wear them out too quickly, so I only brought them out for big races (especially triathlons) where speed and lightness of foot was essential.

Well, now I can use Mizuno shoes to my heart’s content!

Fun at Run United 1

I almost didn’t make it to my 10K at Run United 1. Given my enthusiasm for my upcoming SuBIT triathlon, I fell prey to the worst thing to happen to an athlete aside from injury: overtraining. After a nasty headache, a running nose, a low-grade fever, and fatigue leading up to Sunday, I was glad I’d only signed up for 10K. And since I still wasn’t feeling 100 percent, I downgraded my ambitious goal from “set a new PR” to “finish under 50 minutes”. It took the pressure off and set me up for a fun time on the race course.

I was just happy to be there.

Ipanema Hot Sands

I’m very careful about my running gear, so I only wear my running shoes during a run. After I’m done, I always take them off to allow them to breathe, and I slide on a pair of flipflops to allow my feet to breathe as well.

Of course, being Kikay Runner I’d like to be stylish even when I’m not running; flipflops may be comfortable, but they’re not the most flattering footwear. When I attended the launch of the Ipanema Gisele Bundchen Hot Sands collection two weeks ago, I received a gift certificate to redeem a pair of my own.
